One Lake (2006 – 2009)
Dozens of oil and acrylic on color laser prints on canvas, 3 frosted plastic storage bins, 2006 – 2009.
My immediate family has a 4 season cottage on the lake depicted in this series. My maternal ancestors lived in the area nearby since the 1880s. Cousins of ours still farm and work there today. My ancestors immigrated to Canada from oppressions in Germany. As it happens, one member of the Group of 7 travelled through and made sketches in this same area in the 1930s. In this way, my work reference the Group of 7, and the lakes, forests, and Canadian shield rock outcrops of Southern Ontario.
As a teacher for two years in the subarctic (James Bay west coast), I transported personal goods to and from the community like the locals in plastic containers by small plane. The dozens of paintings that make up One Lake, 2005-2009, are packed the same way in transparent containers.
