Call Me Hysterical (2014 – 2019)

1500 portraits, acrylic on canvas boards, 2×2 inch each, various forms of installation.

This project began as a personal challenge for me to paint approximately 1500 portraits from the Who’s Who in Canada 1977-78, publication. In this way, this work re-presents copy-right protected material. At that time, men’s experience was being understood and taught as universal. This dynamic was contested by feminists in the USA, which influenced young women in Canada such as myself. A friend gave me this book when I was teaching in Slovakia in 2013. The project began when I worked and lived in Slovakia, 2013-2017. It traveled with me to Canada for summers. It has taken different forms of installation.
